Ellen Mandemaker (Haarlem, 1968) has had connection with dolls and figurines all her life. She brings them to life as characters in front of her camera. Initially, Ellen photographed dolls she found, but soon she started to make figurines of clay herself. From there she creates a bright and clear miniature world, in intimate settings, for instance in the stop-motion Dancing Couple.
Ellen Mandemaker makes illustrations for Dutch newspapers and magazines such as de Volkskrant, Het Parool, the VPRO gids and Ouders van Nu. Her project Monkey Playhouse is a poignant story, set in a dollhouse inhabited by a displaced group of lonely creatures. Monkey Playhouse has been published as a photo book. The photos were shown at Galerie Ton de Boer in Amsterdam.
Ellen also exhibited in FOAM and Unseen Amsterdam. She is now working on a survey and an exhibition of color, paper and photography. ellenmandemaker.com
