Gijs Frieling (Amsterdam, 1966) studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunst in Amsterdam. He uses tempera to paint on canvas or paper, and makes wall and ceiling paintings. His work has a direct relationship with the space in which it’s located, and has a great ornamental and traditional character.
Frieling developed his own visual language, in which the gesture and movement of the act of painting itself has an important role to play. He believes his work should bring to mind a certain atmosphere. It should be an experience for the visitor. Or, as he puts it: “I want people to feel welcome and be able to view everything quietly, and at the same time I want to evoke a feeling of inexhaustibility.” gijsfrieling.nl
