Ram Singh Urveti is from India. His hypnotic work stems from a lively tradition, and his method is directly rooted in Gond art. This form of tribal art is practiced by the Gond, one of the largest tribes in India. With dots and stripes in different shades, Ram Singh draws birds, trees, gods and goddesses in many fantastic manifestations. Its visual naivety, enhanced by the round shapes, brings to mind another art form: graffiti.
Ram Singh has won many awards in India. He gained widespread international recognition when he, together with Gond artists Bhajju Shyam and Durga Bai, won the BolognaRagazzi Award for their book The Night Life of Trees. Ram Singh is an important representative of contemporary Indian tribal art, an inspiration for many (Western) image makers. Besides a presentation, Ram Singh gives a workshop at the Illustration Biennial. ram singh online
